Daunte Wright: Ex-Cop Arrested for Manslaughter

A former police officer who shot an African American motorist has been charged with second-degree manslaughter.

Last Sunday, 11 April, Daunte Wright – a 20-year-old from Minneapolis, Minnesota – was pulled over for an expired tag on his car licence plate. Per bodycam footage, he is seen struggling with the officers when their colleague, Kim Potter, approaches him.

Shouting “I’ll tase you! Taser! Taser! Taser!”, Potter then fatally shoots Wright with her pistol.

Following her resignation after 26 years of service earlier this week, Potter was subsequently arrested on Wednesday morning, 14 April, and booked into Hennepin County Jail, where she was charged with Wright’s death.

If found guilty of this charge, Potter faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, as well as a $20 000 fine. She has since been released on $100 000 bail, and is due to appear in court today, Thursday 15 April.

Wright’s death comes nearly a year after George Floyd – another African American man from Minneapolis – was killed by local police officers.
